Bitter Taste in Mouth: If you feel bitterness in your mouth as soon as you open your eyes in the morning and the taste remains bad for some time even after drinking water or brushing teeth, then do not ignore it as just a normal effect of keeping your mouth closed overnight. Sometimes this problem may be due to eating food late at night, drinking less water or lack of oral hygiene, but frequent bitter taste in the mouth can also indicate some other problem going on in the body. Especially if it is accompanied by heartburn, sour belching, bad breath, nausea or stomach problems, then it becomes important to know the reason. Now the question is, why is there bitterness in the mouth as soon as you wake up in the morning? Dr. Sanjay Varshney, Integrated Doctor of Noida is telling about this-
Acid reflux may be the cause
Acid reflux can be a common reason for bitterness or sour taste in the mouth in the morning. Lying down immediately after eating at night can cause stomach acid to rise upward. Due to this, sour or bitter taste may be felt in the throat and mouth. If you have frequent heartburn, sour belching or throat irritation, it is better to consult a doctor.
Pay attention to oral hygiene
If teeth and tongue are not cleaned properly, bacteria and plaque can accumulate in the mouth. This can cause bad and bitter taste in the mouth in the morning. Gum problems, tooth infection or dryness of mouth can also be the reason. It is important to clean the tongue along with daily brushing and drinking enough water.
Dehydration can also cause trouble
Not drinking water overnight can cause mild dehydration in the body. Due to this, saliva is produced less in the mouth and due to increase in bacteria, the mouth may taste bitter or strange in the morning. If your mouth remains dry throughout the day, then make a habit of drinking adequate amount of water.
Also to drugs and other problems
Side effects of some medicines may cause changes in taste or dryness of the mouth. Apart from this, due to the problem of sinus or blocked nose, breathing through the mouth can also cause bad taste in the morning. Sometimes long-term taste problems may be associated with other health conditions.
When should one see a doctor?
If bitterness in the mouth occurs occasionally and goes away after drinking water or brushing teeth, then there is usually nothing to worry about. But if this problem persists for several days or weeks, returns repeatedly or is accompanied by weight loss, persistent vomiting, severe stomach pain, trouble swallowing, chest pain or other unusual symptoms, then it is important to get checked by a doctor or dentist.
