US nuclear companies are preparing feedback on India’s draft SHANTI Act regulations, focusing on licensing, liability and private sector participation. USISPF is coordinating the submission before the September 4 deadline. The framework is expected to shape private investment in India’s nuclear sector as the country targets 100 GW capacity by 2047.
The US nuclear industry is preparing a comprehensive submission to India on the draft rules and regulations for implementing the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act, as the country moves to open its atomic energy sector to private participation.
The Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) released the draft rules and regulations last week and invited comments by Sept 4. The consultation is an important step in translating the SHANTI Act into a framework that companies can follow as they consider entering India's tightly controlled nuclear sector.
US Industry Steps Up Engagement
The US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF), which led a delegation of US nuclear industry representatives to India earlier this year to explore opportunities in the civil nuclear sector, held discussions on Thursday with legal experts in India and the US-based Nuclear Energy Institute.
