Washington. Elon Musk, founder of American aeronautics and satellite services company SpaceX, has advocated for providing Starlink satellite internet service in remote and rural areas of India deprived of internet service. “Starlink will help the most underserved areas in India, especially rural areas,” Musk wrote on social media.
Musk said while replying to 'DodgeDesigner' post
He said this while reacting to a post by an account 'DodgeDesigner' on social media platform 'X' in which Starlink service was advocated to connect remote villages of India. DodgeDesigner said, “By May 2026, 4G service was still not available in 11,256 villages in India. There were 1.093 billion internet 'subscriptions' in India in March 2026, of which only 440.87 crore were in rural areas. Internet subscription density per 100 people in rural areas was 48.31 while in urban areas it was 126.80.
Re-applied for license in India
Musk made this comment amid reports of Starlink filing a new application to provide satellite communication services in India. The Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (IN-SPACE) had earlier rejected Starlink's Gen-2 satellite network application, saying that some of its features and the proposed radio frequency were not compatible with Indian requirements.
The Gen-2 system also includes direct device connectivity. Starlink, operated by Musk's SpaceX, provides internet connectivity through a constellation of satellites in low-Earth orbit (LEO). The company is trying to obtain regulatory approvals to launch its services in India.
