Social media company Meta appears to be mired in controversy once again. Arturo Bejar, a former engineering director at the parent company of platforms like Facebook and Instagram, has leveled serious allegations regarding the company's safety systems. He claims that Meta deliberately designed safety tools for children that were destined to fail.
Bejar cited Instagram's "Take a Break" feature as an example. He stated in court that users must manually enable this feature, as it remains turned off by default; consequently, most users do not activate it. He further argued that the company wants users to remain on the platform and keep scrolling for longer periods to maximize revenue. To achieve this, the company specifically designed notifications to encourage increased scrolling.
**Meta's Response**
Dismissing Bejar's allegations, Meta stated that it has developed numerous features with user safety in mind. The company added that it is collaborating with parents, experts, and various agencies to ensure child safety on its platforms.
**Allegations of Stealing Children's Data**
Meta also faces accusations of stealing children's data and making them addicted to its platforms. Lawsuits regarding this matter are currently underway across 29 US states. If the allegations against Meta are proven true, the company could face fines of up to approximately ₹19.1 lakh crore and would be required to alter its business model.
