Pakistan’s opposition parties have agreed to work together in Parliament and adopt a joint strategy, opening a fresh political challenge for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s government as security, economic and governance problems continue to pile up. Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced the agreement after consultations with opposition leaders, including National Assembly Opposition Leader Mehmood Khan Achakzai.
Reportedly, Rehman said the opposition had reached a consensus on working together and would put its position before the public. He accused the government of misleading people about the situation on the ground and said opposition parties would formulate a unified parliamentary strategy. The parties had already agreed in principle earlier this week to move towards a joint front and continue consultations on a common course of action.
Pakistan opposition turns security crisis into political challenge
The JUI-F chief sharply criticised the government over law and order, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He described the situation in both provinces as a “war-like situation” and questioned whether the state was able to enforce its writ.
As per reports, Rehman also questioned Pakistan’s counter-terrorism strategy, arguing that two decades of anti-terror operations had failed to produce visible results. His comments come as both provinces continue to face militant and separatist violence, adding pressure on a government already dealing with wider political and economic difficulties.
Pakistan economy takes hit as unrest and isolation grow
Rehman linked the security situation directly to Pakistan’s economic troubles, saying lawlessness was hurting businesses and economic activity. He pointed to restrictions on trade along the country’s eastern and western borders and argued that Pakistan was becoming increasingly isolated and insecure.
Reports say that he blamed what he called the “hybrid regime’s” policies for the situation. The opposition leader’s broader argument is that deteriorating security and economic conditions are not separate problems but signs of deeper failures in governance.
Pakistan faces province debate and PoK unrest warning
Rehman also rejected discussions about dividing provinces or creating new ones while the country faces a deeper crisis. He said there could be no debate about dividing provinces while Pakistan was “on fire”. He had earlier criticised such discussions, arguing that security, inflation and governance problems required a broader national dialogue.
He also warned about unrest in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, particularly Rawalakot. Rehman said failing to engage with protesters and address their concerns could make the situation worse.
Pakistan government faces united opposition pressure
The emerging parliamentary alliance brings the JUI-F closer to other opposition groups after months of talks on greater coordination. Rehman has said the effort is intended to make the opposition’s collective role inside Parliament more effective.
For Shehbaz Sharif’s government, the development comes at a difficult time. Pakistan is facing security concerns in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, economic pressure, trade restrictions and unrest in PoK. The opposition’s decision to act together does not by itself mean the government is collapsing, but it gives its political rivals a stronger platform to challenge its handling of the country’s mounting domestic problems.
