31-Year-Old M.Sc Student Enters IIT Delhi at 8 AM, Dies After Fall From Sixth Floor: Here’s What Happened

A 31-year-old M.Sc. Physics student at IIT Delhi died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building on the institute campus on Saturday morning, police said. The incident was reported at around 8:33 am on August 22. A PCR call about a student falling from a building was received at Kishangarh police station. A police team reached the IIT Delhi campus soon after. The injured student was taken to the institute’s campus hospital. Doctors declared him brought dead.

The crime scene investigation team and the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were also called. They inspected the spot and collected evidence.

What Happened At IIT Delhi Campus?

According to the police report, the 31-year-old student was an M.Sc. Physics student at IIT Delhi. The initial investigation revealed that the student entered the campus through the main gate at around 8 am. He then went to the Lecture Hall Complex. Police also stated that he took the lift to the sixth floor before falling from the building.

“He subsequently went to the Lecture Hall Complex, took a lift to the 6th floor and jumped from the front side of the building towards the Lecture Hall Complex,” an officer said. Police have not found any apparent injury marks other than those linked to the fall. No suicide note has been recovered so far.

Police Recover Student’s Mobile Phone

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said the police control room received information about the incident at around 8:33 am.

“A police team rushed to the scene, and the injured person was shifted to the IIT Delhi campus hospital, where the attending doctor declared him brought dead,” Goel said.

He added that the student was identified during the enquiry as an M.Sc. Physics student at IIT Delhi.

“During the enquiry conducted so far, no apparent injury marks other than those attributable to the fall have come to notice. No suicide note has been found,” Goel said.

A mobile phone was recovered from the student’s pocket. Police said it will be examined as part of the investigation.

“The counselling records and other relevant information from the institute are being obtained, and the facts are being verified. Further legal action is being taken as per law,” Goel added.

IIT Delhi Calls Incident Tragic

An IIT Delhi official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident.

“A tragic incident has happened. The Delhi Police are investigating the incident,” the official said. The police investigation is now focused on establishing the circumstances leading up to the student’s death. Officials are also examining relevant records and other available evidence.

Second Alleged Suicide At IIT Delhi Since March

The incident is the second alleged suicide at the IIT Delhi campus since March. In March, a 19-year-old first-year BTech student died by suicide at an apartment inside the campus. Police registered a case of abetment of suicide a day later and began an investigation. In the latest case, police have not disclosed any possible motive. The enquiry is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
