New Delhi: India is rapidly strengthening its position on the global electronics manufacturing map. Due to the far-sighted policies and incentive schemes of the Central Government, the world's leading tech companies have now taken steps towards making India their new manufacturing and export hub by reducing their dependence on China. Apple's plans to expand its production base in India and Google's plans to shift production of its export-oriented devices from China to India have given a new boost to the country's electronics sector. The government believes that this change will give India a stronger and more important position in the global supply chain.
New manufacturing plan worth ₹62,500 crore
The Central Government has approved 'Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme' (MPMS) worth approximately ₹62,500 crore. This scheme will operate starting from the current financial year till 2030-31. After the success of the PLI scheme, the new policy aims to promote not just assembling but value addition and component manufacturing in the country.
Under this scheme, eligible mobile manufacturers will be given a manufacturing incentive of 2.25% to 5% depending on the sales. Additionally, additional financial assistance of up to 1.5% will also be provided to companies with the aim of promoting local procurement of parts and components.
Apple and Google's increasing trust in India
According to Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, Apple, one of the world's most valuable companies, will no longer be limited to just iPhone in India. The company is preparing to rapidly expand its existing manufacturing ecosystem in the country. Under this, apart from iPhone, other major hardware products and essential components of Apple will also be manufactured in India. This step will promote local suppliers and component manufacturers, thereby creating new employment opportunities at the domestic level. Along with this, big signals are also emerging regarding Google. According to media reports, Google is planning to shift the production of its export-oriented devices from China to India. If this plan is fully implemented, the production of Google's Pixel smartphones and other smart devices in India will increase rapidly. The strategy of companies setting up manufacturing centers in countries other than China is directly benefiting India from becoming a major global export base.
Historic boom in Indian brands, designs and exports
In this new initiative of the government, special attention has been given to Indian companies and the local design ecosystem. A provision of 5% incentive has been made for domestic brands, while companies doing research, development and product designing in India will get an additional incentive of 3%. The government is working with Indian brands to develop high-quality smartphone designs for the high-volume segment within the next 10 to 14 months. The figures of the last decade tell this changing picture of India. A record increase of about 166 times has been registered in India's mobile phone exports during the year 2014 to 2025. Today, the contribution of mobile phones in the total electronics manufacturing exports of the country has become the most important. With the increasing participation of global giants and government incentives, India has now cemented its place among the top centers of the global mobile industry.
