The war of words within the Bar Council of India (BCI) has intensified after BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra hit back at BCI Co-Chairman Y.R. Sadashiva Reddy, questioning his membership status following an ultimatum demanding Mishra's resignation within 15 days.
Reddy has accused Mishra of embezzling Rs 150 crore, while Mishra has dismissed the allegations, describing them as motivated by personal and political reasons.
Mishra Questions Reddy's Membership Status
According to IANS, Mishra said that Reddy was once a member and Co-Chairman but was no longer a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council.
“Bar BCI President Manan Kumar Mishra said that there was a time when Reddy was a member and co-chairman. Today, Sadashiv Reddy is not even a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council. The election results have been declared. He did not contest the election. Today, he is not even a member of the Karnataka State Bar Council.”
'Personal And Political Reasons Behind Allegations'
Mishra also responded to Reddy's allegation that he had embezzled ₹150 crore. In his letter, Mishra said the accusations were driven by personal and political reasons.
He said Reddy was associated with another party and opposed the BJP. Mishra further claimed that Reddy had been his opponent from the beginning and had opposed him as much as possible while he was a member.
“And today, even after being expelled from the Bar Council, he is making such absurd and nonsense statements,” Mishra said.
Row Comes After NALSAR Controversy
The latest exchange has further intensified the dispute between the two BCI leaders. Mishra had earlier faced controversy following protests by students at the Hyderabad-based NALSAR Law College over the CJI's convocation.
Following the protests, Mishra issued a ruling prohibiting college students from registering as lawyers, triggering further demonstrations. The decision was later reversed, following which Mishra apologised to the students.
The Young Advocates Association, meanwhile, continues its protest and is demanding Mishra's resignation.
