Mumbai Indians' appointment of Zubin Bharucha as their new Director of Performance has brought renewed attention to his long career in Indian cricket, but an old controversy surrounding his name has also resurfaced online.
Bharucha's reported association with a 2012 civil society petition seeking commutation of Ajmal Kasab's death sentence has triggered discussion on social media following his move to the five-time IPL champions.
The petition sought the commutation of Kasab's death sentence to life imprisonment and was signed by more than 200 people, according to reports. Bharucha's name was reportedly among the signatories.
However, signing such a petition does not by itself establish support for Kasab's ideology or the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. The petition was framed around opposition to the death penalty and sought commutation of the sentence.
Why Is Zubin Bharucha Trending After Mumbai Indians Appointment?
Bharucha was appointed Mumbai Indians' Director of Performance as the franchise began preparations for IPL 2027.
The former Mumbai cricketer has built a reputation for talent identification and player development, particularly during his long association with Rajasthan Royals.
His work with RR coincided with the development of players including Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag and Yashasvi Jaiswal. He was also involved in the emergence of teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who became one of the biggest young names in Indian cricket.
Bharucha will now work within Mumbai Indians' performance structure alongside the franchise's coaching and support staff.

Bharucha's Playing And Coaching Career
Bharucha represented Mumbai at age-group level before making his first-class debut during the 1992-93 season.
He went on to play 17 first-class matches and 11 List A games before his playing career ended in the mid-1990s.
He later moved into cricket administration and player development, joining Rajasthan Royals in 2008. He subsequently spent two seasons with Delhi Daredevils before returning to Rajasthan.
His association with the Royals continued for several years, with Bharucha holding senior roles in the franchise's cricket and performance structure.
What Was The Ajmal Kasab Petition?
Following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Kasab was convicted and sentenced to death. A public campaign opposing capital punishment subsequently sought the commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.
The petition was based on opposition to the death penalty rather than an endorsement of Kasab or the attacks.
The President of India rejected Kasab's mercy petition in November 2012. Kasab was subsequently executed at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune on November 21, 2012.
Bharucha's reported presence among the petition's signatories has resurfaced after his appointment by Mumbai Indians, prompting debate online.
However, there is no basis in the information presented here to attribute support for Kasab or the 26/11 attacks to Bharucha simply because his name appeared on a petition opposing capital punishment.
His new role at Mumbai Indians will instead put the focus on his expertise in identifying and developing cricketing talent as the franchise begins building towards IPL 2027.
