Beijing. China has completely closed access to the northern side of Mount Everest and other peaks above 8,000 meters in Tibet to foreign climbers. The tough move comes after an investigation into controversial mountaintop fireworks by an outdoor brand and a Chinese artist in Tibet's Shigatse region and massive corruption in the issuance of permits.

Main reasons for ban

Let us tell you that in September 2025, a dragon-shaped fireworks show was organized on the Tibetan Plateau. Due to this, plastic waste spread on the mountains, the environment was damaged and wild animals also had to face problems due to loud noise and lights. Apart from this, several senior officials of China-Tibet Mountaineering Association and Tibet Sports Bureau have been sent to jail for illegally ordering foreign climbers and in cases of financial corruption.

Its effect on climbers

The North Side of Mount Everest as well as the Shishapangma and Cho Oyu peaks are closed to foreign climbers. This has dealt a major blow to the global mountaineers who are in the race to create a record of conquering all the 14 highest peaks of the world i.e. heights above 8,000 meters. This has happened because these peaks can be crossed only through Tibet. Although the routes are closed to foreigners, local Chinese companies have been given full permission to organize trekking in these mountains for their domestic climbers.
