Lucknow. The Uttar Pradesh government has adopted a strict stance regarding the rising prices and hoarding of sugar before the festive season. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed the officials to ensure that there is adequate availability of sugar in the market and artificial shortage should not be created at any level.

Stock banned for more than 30 days

The government has increased the strictness regarding storage of sugar for traders. According to the instructions, no businessman will be allowed to store sugar for a long time. At the same time, action will be taken against dealers keeping more than 400 tonnes of stock. If necessary, instructions have been given to take strict action under ESMA also.

Government's eye on increased prices

In recent times, the prices of sugar have increased rapidly in the retail market. At some places, the price has come to the fore reaching Rs 65 to Rs 70 per kg. In view of the possibility of increase in demand during the festive season, the government is busy strengthening the supply system.

Center will also increase supply in the market

To maintain the availability of sugar, the Central Government has also opened the way for duty-free import. There are preparations to increase the supply in the domestic market by importing about 10 lakh tonnes of sugar. Apart from this, the stock available in sugar mills will also be examined.

Special monitoring till new crushing starts

New crushing of sugarcane is expected to start from October. In such a situation, the government's priority is to keep sufficient sugar available in the market till then. Due to increase in demand during festivals, the next few months are considered important in terms of prices. The aim of the government is clear to maintain regular supply of sugar in the market by curbing hoarding and black marketing, so that common people do not have to bear the extra burden of expensive sugar during the festive season.
