New Delhi: A big change has been seen in IPL. Zubin Bharucha, who was associated with Rajasthan Royals for 16 years, has now become a part of the Mumbai Indians family. MI has made him Director of Performance. Bharucha was with Rajasthan Royals since the first season and played a major role in grooming young talents like Sanju Samson, Riyan Parag and recently Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
What will be Bharucha's role in Mumbai Indians?
Bharucha's focus will be on the off-season at Mumbai Indians. He will work exclusively with Indian players and will be based at MI's hub in Mumbai. According to the report of Cricinfo, he will work closely with assistant coach Paras Mhambrey.
They will also coordinate with the coaching staff regarding the players' goals. Bharucha will work with the existing multi-disciplinary leadership group across all performance- areas across the MI ecosystem, the franchise said in a statement.
By joining the support staff, he will further build on Mumbai Indians' excellent track record in player development. Bharucha has taken up the new position and is currently in South Africa with Mhambrey and a group of MI young players.
Bharucha's 16 year journey with Rajasthan Royals
Zubin Bharucha spent most of his post-playing career with Rajasthan Royals. He first joined the franchise in 2008 as team director. When Rajasthan was suspended in 2016 and 2017.
Then he went to Delhi Daredevils as Technical Director. In 2018, he returned to Rajasthan Royals as Director of Cricket and remained in the same role till 2025.
Barring two seasons in Delhi, he was associated with the Royals for almost two decades. The special thing is that before his debut in Ranji Trophy in 1992-93, Bharucha had played age-group cricket for Mumbai. He has played 17 first-class and 11 List-A matches.
Mumbai Indians' big bet on young talent
It is noteworthy that now he will work with head coach Mahela Jayawardene, batting coach Kieron Pollard and bowling coach Lasith Malinga. For the last few years, Mumbai Indians were struggling to identify young talent and make it big. Bharucha has been appointed to fill this gap. MI wants to become a talent factory again and return to the title race.
