Over 20 Injured As 5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Tokyo, Eastern Japan; Trains Delayed

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday, shaking Tokyo and surrounding areas and leaving more than 20 people injured, officials said. There was no danger of a tsunami.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometres. The region is prone to frequent seismic activity. The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at a preliminary magnitude of 5.8.

Twenty-three people were injured in four prefectures in the region, including nine in Saitama, another nine in Kanagawa, four in Chiba and one in Ibaraki, the Associated Press reported, citing prefectural officials.

The Fire and Disaster Management Agency reported at least five injuries in Ibaraki, Chiba and Saitama prefectures, northeast of Tokyo. It said additional injuries had been reported and that details were still being investigated.
