FIFA turn down Mateta's contract claim as Crystal Palace forward suffers major setback in bid to leave

Jean-Philippe Mateta's attempt to engineer a surprise departure from Crystal Palace has run into a major obstacle after his legal challenge over the status of his contract was thrown out. The French striker had been hoping to leave Selhurst Park as a free agent by claiming that his existing deal was no longer valid.

FIFA reject striker's contract dispute

Crystal Palace striker Mateta has suffered a major blow in his efforts to force through a move away from Selhurst Park. The 29-year-old attacker is reported to have taken an unexpected contractual dispute to FIFA in an effort to have his current agreement declared void, but world football's governing body has dismissed his case.

The Frenchman remains under contract with the Eagles until June 30, 2027, but he had sought legal action to argue that the final two months of his deal should be treated as invalid. According to reports from the BBC, Mateta's legal representatives tried to identify a loophole in the extension clause that the club had previously activated.

Tribunal supports Crystal Palace's stance

Before the issue was taken to FIFA, it had already been considered by an independent tribunal operating under Premier League regulations. Mateta first signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with the Eagles in January 2022 after joining from Bundesliga club Mainz. That original contract contained a clear option allowing the club to extend his stay until 2027 - an option Palace exercised in 2024, although Mateta now contends that the clause should be regarded as void from July 1.

The independent tribunal examined the terms of the contract and the manner in which the extension was activated, and eventually ruled in Crystal Palace's favour. It found the contract to be legally valid and fully enforceable. Only after that domestic decision did Mateta move his case to world football's governing body, which ultimately refused to step in, saying the matter was outside its jurisdiction.

Failed transfer moves and interest from Europe

This legal dispute follows a year of doubt surrounding Mateta's future. The forward has been trying to leave Crystal Palace for some time and came very close to an exit during the January transfer window. If he had succeeded in having his contract terminated early, he would likely have become one of the most in-demand free agents on the market.

A possible Serie A transfer, with reported interest from AC Milan, is said to have collapsed late in the process because of an injury detected during a medical, which stopped him from completing a permanent move away from the Premier League. In spite of the ongoing legal tension and his wish to leave, Mateta continues to be an important member of the first-team squad.

Goalscoring record and current position

Under new manager Pierre Sage, Mateta's role was limited in the opening match of the season, as he was taken off after only an hour in today's 2-0 defeat to Everton. His value to the team is reflected in his numbers since moving to London. The striker has scored 62 goals for Crystal Palace in 203 appearances in all competitions. Last season was especially fruitful for the Frenchman, as he scored 12 league goals after registering 14 in the previous campaign.
