Manchester United began their Premier League season with a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull City, and former goalkeeper David de Gea later offered a message of encouragement.

First-half strikes from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy in East Yorkshire settled United’s opening game of the 2026-27 campaign. De Gea wrote: “It’s not how it starts, it’s how it ends.”

United had gone into the new season with expectations of a top-four finish before kick-off, but their campaign opened on a disappointing note against a side that ended last season in sixth place in the second tier.

De Gea, now on the books of Fiorentina as their goalkeeper, spent 12 years at Old Trafford and won the club’s player of the year award on four occasions.

He is set to begin his own 2026-27 league season on Monday evening when Fiorentina travel to face Roma at the Stadio Olimpico. That match is the final fixture of the opening round of Serie A and is scheduled to kick off at 19.45 BST.
