According to meteorologists, the El Nino forming in the Pacific Ocean may be very strong this time. It is estimated to be one of the strongest El Niño events since the 19th century. This effect could further increase the global average temperature and 2026 or 2027 could be among the hottest years. During El-Nino, the sea water in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than normal. This time, the temperature of the sea surface is estimated to be about 3 degrees Celsius higher than normal. Typically during a strong El-Nino this increase is about 1 to 2 degrees Celsius.
What is El Nino?
El-Nino is a natural weather cycle that occurs every few years. When the sea water is warmer, its heat reaches the atmosphere. This changes the general pattern of winds and rainfall and affects the climate of many countries around the world. During a strong El-Nino, the temperature of the eastern Pacific Ocean is 1 to 2 degrees Celsius above normal. An increase of 2 degrees is also considered quite large, but this time the increase is expected to reach around 3 degrees Celsius. Earlier, very strong El Nino was observed in 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16.
India's monsoon may also be affected
El-Nino changes the general pattern of oceans and winds. Its impact is not the same in every region. Heavy rains and floods may occur in some areas, while less rains and hot weather may occur in some places. El Nino can also affect India's monsoon. A strong El-Nino is often associated with a weak monsoon in India. So, this time, the weathermen are also keeping an eye on the monsoon situation.
2026 or 2027 may become the hottest year
The effect of this strong El-Nino could make 2026 the hottest year ever, although 2027 is also predicted to be the hottest year on record. This is because the effect of increased ocean warming with El-Nino on Earth's average temperature is more pronounced after some time.
Temperature records were also set during strong El Niños in 1998 and 2016. But now the earth has already warmed enough due to climate change. In such a case, another strong El-Nino could drive global temperatures higher.
Scientists estimate that the world's average temperature in 2027 could remain at least 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for some time. If these predictions prove to be correct then the effect of El Nino on the temperature, rainfall and weather patterns of the world can be clearly seen in the near future.
