The opposition is raising questions on the policy of using ethanol from sugarcane for E20 petrol amid the shortage of sugar. Congress MP Mallikarjun Kharge wrote in X Post on Saturday, 'The bitterness of Modi government's policies has mixed with the sweetness of sugar before the festivals. 3 direct questions to Modi government: 1. Why is the sugar stock in India, the world's largest sugar producer and exporter, at its lowest level in 9 years? How did it reach the point of stopping exports and importing 10 lakh tonnes of sugar duty-free? On the rise in the price of sugar before the festivals, he asked, 'Sugar has become costlier by almost 40% in three months – who is responsible for this inflationary burden on the public before the festivals?'
Kharge further wrote, 'When there is a shortage of sugar in the country and the government is importing sugar from abroad, then why is the policy of using sugarcane and grains to make Ethanol for E20 not being reviewed? What kind of 'self-reliant India' is this? First the production of sugar decreased, then the stock reached a 9-year low, now they are importing sugar from abroad – and on the other hand they are converting sugarcane into ethanol to mix it with petrol!
Let us tell you that at present the average price of sugar in the retail market in the country has increased to around Rs 52 to 58 per kg, while in some states and local markets it is being sold at Rs 65 to 70 per kg. Last month, sugar was being sold at Rs 45 to 46 per kg. This sudden increase has spoiled the kitchen budget of the common man. This has happened at a time when festivals like Rakshabandhan and Janmashtami are near.
