Updating the address on your Aadhaar card is now easy. By providing the necessary documents, you can change your address online from the comfort of your home and track the status of the update.
Nowadays, the Aadhaar card is not merely an identity document; it has become an essential part of our daily lives. Whether you want to open a bank account, avail benefits from government schemes, or get a new SIM card, the Aadhaar card is required everywhere. Consequently, if you have recently moved house or shifted to a different city, having an outdated address on your Aadhaar card can sometimes lead to complications.
Issues can arise—particularly during verification for banking or government schemes—if the address on your Aadhaar card does not match that on other documents. Fortunately, updating your Aadhaar address has become very simple; you do not need to visit a service center, as the process can be completed online from home.
How to Update Your Address Online
To change your address in Aadhaar, first visit the myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in. Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number and the captcha code; an OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number, which you must enter to log in. Once logged in, select the 'Address Update' option and click on 'Update Aadhaar using your documents.' Your current address will appear on the screen; scroll down to enter your new address, ensuring you accurately provide details such as state, district, city, and post office. Additionally, you will need to upload a valid proof of the new address, such as an electricity bill, bank statement, passport, rent agreement, or voter ID. If you do not have an address proof in your own name, you can use the 'Head of Family' (HoF) method; this allows you to update your address by providing the family head's Aadhaar number and proof of your relationship with them. After entering all the details correctly and submitting the request, you will receive a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN), which you can use to check the status of your update later.
Important Points to Remember
It is crucial to keep a few small details in mind when updating your address in Aadhaar. First, ensure that the document you are uploading is clear and fully legible; otherwise, your request could be rejected. Also, note that you can update your Aadhaar address as many times as you wish, provided you submit the correct proof each time. If you are simply re-verifying your existing documents—meaning you are not changing the address itself—this service is completely free until June 14, 2027. However, if you are updating to a new address, a nominal fee of ₹75 applies for the online process.
