Tezzbuzz Desk – US President Donald Trump administration is preparing to increase economic pressure on Iran. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, Washington may announce the toughest sanctions ever against Iran next week. The purpose of these sanctions is to target Iran's main sources of income and increase pressure on its oil business, financial networks and international trade. Besant can give important information on this entire matter in the press conference on Monday.
America has long been imposing sanctions on Iran regarding its nuclear program, human rights and regional activities. However, tension between the two countries has increased further after the war that started in February. The Trump administration has already imposed several sanctions in the maritime, energy and financial sectors. According to data from the US Treasury Department, since the beginning of Trump's second term, more than a thousand people, ships and aircraft to Iran have been banned. Apart from this, cryptocurrency worth about 500 million dollars to Iran has also been frozen.
China's small refineries may also be targeted in America's new plan. The biggest buyer of Iran's oil is China and according to the data of 2025, China purchases more than 80 percent of Iran's oil. China's small and independent refineries, known as 'teapot' refineries, play an important role in purchasing Iranian oil. To avoid American sanctions, action can also be taken against these institutions. Along with this, America is also increasing pressure on the big banks of China. US officials have warned two big Chinese banks that they may also face sanctions if Iranian funds are transferred through them. However, the US is being cautious about this move as China may retaliate by banning the export of important technical minerals.
Fake companies and financial networks are also being targeted to put pressure on Iran. US officials allege that Iran continuously creates new companies to avoid sanctions and obtain oil income from other sources. Breaking such networks can be an important part of the Trump administration's strategy. After sea and air routes, the possibility of encircling Iran through land routes is also being discussed. Iran borders Iraq, Türkiye, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Armenia. If trade pressure is increased on these routes, Iran may face difficulties in importing food, energy and other essential goods. However, experts believe that implementing such a widespread ground blockade would be extremely challenging.
Apart from this, the Trump administration may also prepare to impose new tariffs on countries that trade with Iran. If this happens, the economic pressure on countries and companies doing business with Iran may increase further. However, any such new step may also face legal and political challenges. Overall, the US strategy appears to be to simultaneously put pressure on Iran's oil revenues, banking network, trading companies and transportation routes. If the proposed sanctions are implemented, it could impact Iran's economy as well as trade relations with China and the Gulf region. In the coming days, the new announcement of the Trump administration will make it clear to what level America wants to take the economic pressure on Iran.
