Rishabh Pant Retired Hurt: Rishabh Pant was forced to leave the field after suffering a wrist injury during India's first innings on Day 1 of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Sunday. The India wicketkeeper-batsman was struck while attempting to play a pull shot against Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara. Pant tried to take on a short delivery during the 58th over, but the ball instead caught the glove and hit his wrist. Pant immediately appeared to be in considerable discomfort and received treatment from India's support staff before eventually walking off the field retired hurt.
Pant Takes Painful Blow While Attempting Pull
The incident occurred as Rishabh Pant looked to continue India's progress during the opening day at the Sinhalese Sports Club.
Kumara delivered a short ball, prompting Pant to attempt one of his trademark attacking strokes. However, he failed to make the desired connection and the ball struck his glove before hitting his wrist.
The batsman was visibly troubled by the impact. India's physio attended to him and spent an extended period assessing the injury.
An ice pack was applied to Pant's wrist in an effort to limit swelling and ease the immediate discomfort. Despite the treatment break, Pant was unable to continue batting.
Ravindra Jadeja Replaces Pant At The Crease
After the lengthy interruption, Pant made the decision to leave the field retired hurt.
Ravindra Jadeja subsequently walked out to join the India batsman at the crease.
The timing of the injury will be a concern for India, given Pant's importance to the team's batting order as well as his role behind the stumps.
He has been one of India's key players in Test cricket, particularly because of his ability to change the course of an innings with aggressive strokeplay.
For now, the immediate focus will be on the extent of the wrist injury and Pant's recovery. Further assessment will determine whether he can return to the field later in the match.
