A new hero announced himself in Real Madrid colours late on Saturday night, as Los Blancos fought their way to a dramatic last-gasp win away to Espanyol.
Los Blancos got their La Liga campaign up and running a short while ago, making the trip to Catalunya for the first competitive match of José Mourinho’s new spell in charge.
As the game moved into injury time, the visitors appeared set to be left with a frustrating share of the points after Jude Bellingham’s early opener had been cancelled out by Álex Calatrava.
But just when he was needed most, an unexpected hero stepped up for Real Madrid’s star-studded squad.
After reacting quickest to a loose ball inside the Espanyol penalty area, Carlos Espí, fresh from a summer move from Levante, showed impressive calmness to set himself before firing home a confident right-footed finish.
That proved to be the final goal of the night at RCDE Stadium, as the Santiago Bernabéu hierarchy’s gamble on signing a young and inexperienced centre-forward paid off on the opening day.
