Ahmedabad, August 23 (IANS). ISRO Chairman and Department of Space Secretary Dr. V. Narayanan said on the occasion of the third National Space Day in Ahmedabad on Sunday that there are now about 440 startups in India's space sector. This represents a major expansion of private participation in an industry that was once dominated by government institutions.

Narayanan said that this increase in the number of startups has happened after the reforms in the space sector, which have opened up more opportunities for private companies and entrepreneurs.

This figure puts India's emerging private space ecosystem at the center of the country's larger efforts to expand its role in the global space industry.

Narayanan said that after the reforms in the space sector, the number of startups in the country has increased significantly and today about 440 startups are working in the space sector.

ISRO Chairman said that India's space program started in 1962. Now, moving forward from the initial years, it has now transformed into a program through which common citizens are getting direct benefits.

Narayanan cited some of the country's major achievements, including the discovery of water molecules on the Moon by Chandrayaan-1, the advanced camera technology used in Chandrayaan-2, and the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 near the south pole of the Moon on August 23, 2023.

National Space Day is celebrated to commemorate the achievement of Chandrayaan-3. Along with India working on big missions, the private sector is also expanding.

He said the country is working on the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program and the proposed Indian space station. The first module of the space station has been approved and the target is to install the station by 2035.

The event was organized by ISRO's Space Applications Center on the theme 'Towards a Developed India: Innovation, Collaboration and Aspiration for Global Space Leadership'.

The program also discussed preparing youth for careers in space science and technology, expanding India's new space ecosystem and developing international collaborations.
