Chicago’s growing belief shines through in stunning long-range strike

Chicago could yet mount an unexpected challenge for top spot in the Eastern Conference after a strong recent run lifted them into third place. That growing self-belief was on display again on Saturday.

Chicago Fire travelled to New York to take on the Red Bulls and went in front just minutes before half-time. This time, however, it was not marquee signing Robert Lewandowski who found the net.

Instead, it was Maren Haile-Selassie who broke the deadlock. After the move was worked out to the left flank, the No. 7 was found close to the corner of the penalty area.

He wasted no time and unleashed a quick effort into the far-right corner. The finish was placed too well for goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, despite his full-length dive.

The strike was Haile-Selassie’s fifth goal of the season in 21 MLS matches, to go with his four assists.

Haile-Selassie had earlier claimed the Fire’s Golden Boot after scoring six goals during the 2023 campaign.

Could Lewandowski’s arrival and productivity be helping to spark a revival among Chicago’s other attacking players?
