Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has made the striking claim that he would have no interest in signing Lamine Yamal, even if the Barcelona star was put up for transfer. In spite of the teenager being a world champion and the most valuable player in football, the 'Special One' says his current squad at the Santiago Bernabeu does not need any more additions.
Mourinho turns down Barcelona's golden boy
In a summer that has already created huge excitement in the Spanish capital with the return of the iconic Portuguese coach, Mourinho has quickly made his position clear. Even though Yamal already has an astonishing three La Liga titles in the early stage of his career, along with European Championship and World Cup triumphs, the Real Madrid boss remains firm that the 19-year-old has no place in his plans.
Yamal delivered 42 goal contributions in 45 matches last season, underlining his status as one of the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d'Or. But when El Chiringuito asked whether he would like to bring the Barcelona sensation to the Bernabeu, Mourinho gave a direct response: "No. He’s a great player, without a doubt, a young player with unbelievable potential. To be a European and world champion at his age isn't normal, but we’ve got a top-class squad here; I wouldn't make room for anyone. These are my boys now. And my players are the best."
The rise of Yan Diomande
Part of Mourinho's confidence comes from the club's own huge spending this summer. Real Madrid have recently completed the signing of Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig for a fee that could rise to a record-breaking €140m. The Ivory Coast international is expected to fill the right-wing role this season, while Vinicius Junior continues to dominate on the other side after turning down a lucrative move to Arsenal.
Speaking about the former RB Leipzig youngster, Mourinho said: "Finding a wide player [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive, and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough. On top of that, he's young, has room to develop, and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... I analyse the player's profile and what he can bring to my team, and on that basis, I said: 'Yes, I want him.'"
Flick's tactical shift at Barcelona
While Mourinho gets his Galacticos ready, Barcelona are managing a transition under Hansi Flick. After the big-name exits of Robert Lewandowski to Chicago Fire and Ferran Torres to Paris Saint-Germain, Yamal is expected to shoulder even greater responsibility.
Despite the intense rivalry, Mourinho also offered a rare word of appreciation for the work being done at Barcelona. When asked about the current state of Flick's side, the former Chelsea and Manchester United manager admitted: "Yes, I do [like them]. They're doing a brilliant job. Flick, Deco, and obviously the players... I like what I'm seeing."
Battle for La Liga supremacy
The coming campaign is shaping up to be one of the fiercest in recent memory, with Yamal and Diomande emerging as the next generation of global stars. Real Madrid are eager to remove Barcelona from the top after Flick guided the club to back-to-back domestic league titles.
As the 2026-27 season begins, Diomande will be under pressure to live up to his enormous transfer fee and prove Mourinho was right to overlook the world's most valuable teenager. For Yamal, the task will be to continue his remarkable rise and show the Real Madrid manager exactly what he has chosen to pass on.
