National Security Advisor Ajit Doval will travel to Beijing on Monday to attend the 25th round of Special Representatives (SR) talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, focusing on the long‑standing 3,488 km boundary dispute between India and China.
The structured SR mechanism, established in 2003, has yet to resolve the dispute but is seen as a crucial platform for managing tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The talks gain added significance as they precede the expected visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit on September 12‑13, potentially opening the door for bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently reiterated that peace and tranquillity along the border remain a prerequisite for healthy ties, amid reports of Chinese troop activity in Arunachal Pradesh. India has firmly rejected Beijing’s claims over the state, calling Arunachal Pradesh an inalienable and integral part of India.
Both sides have agreed to maintain communication through diplomatic and military channels, with the CID and Detective Branch also engaged in reviewing the situation. The upcoming Doval‑Wang dialogue is expected to focus on stabilising the frontier and ensuring that border tensions do not derail broader bilateral relations.
