A major accident took place in Conakry, the capital of the African country Guinea, in the early hours of Sunday. Due to heavy rains, a mountain of garbage stored in the city's largest landfill suddenly collapsed, resulting in the death of at least 30 people. After the accident, the administration has started relief and rescue operations.
Landslide caused by rain, people buried under debris
According to data released by the Guinean government, a pile of garbage caved in at around 2 am after heavy rains in the landfill located in the Dar-es-Salaam area of the capital Conakry. The collapse of the mountain of garbage created a landslide-like situation and many huts built nearby were buried under the debris. Relief teams reached the spot and started searching for the trapped people.
Six people seriously injured, many houses destroyed
According to officials, six people have been seriously injured in the accident, while many houses have been completely destroyed. Sanitation Officer of the Military Engineering Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Balde Mamadou Bailo said that the decision was taken on Sunday to close this large open garbage dump of the city.
Warning was given in advance to evacuate the area
According to the administration, people living around the landfill had already been given notice to vacate the area. After this, many families had moved to another place, but some people were still present in that area at the time of the accident. Territorial Administration and Decentralization Minister Deunabou Touré said arrangements would be made to resettle the affected families to safer places.
