Juventus nearly paid the price for a string of missed chances away at Frosinone, but after Guglielmo Vicario’s injury scare they were spared by the woodwork, with Gleison Bremer’s goal enough to secure an opening victory.

The Bianconeri handed starts to new arrivals Randal Kolo Muani, Guglielmo Vicario and Zeki Celik, while Douglas Luiz looked rejuvenated after his loan spells with Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa. However, Federico Gatti and Jeff Ekhator were unavailable through injury, with the defender having been hurt by a clumsy supporter during a pitch invasion.

The Canaries finished second in Serie B last season and began the new campaign with a 4-1 win over Juve Stabia in the Coppa Italia. Fares Ghedjemi was not even named on the bench amid transfer pressure from Besiktas, so Seydou Fini started alongside Giorgi Kvernadze.

Juventus squandered two major chances early on. Gleison Bremer sent a free header wide from a Douglas Luiz short-corner routine, and then Kolo Muani blasted over from point-blank range.

At the third attempt, though, they made it count. From yet another short-corner move, Francisco Conceicao delivered a floated cross and Bremer headed in from six yards.

Frosinone then had a double chance of their own, with Giacomo Calò forcing a save from Vicario before Kvernadze fired the rebound wide.

Shortly afterwards, Juve again failed to add to their lead. Pierre Kalulu’s fierce effort was pushed on to the upright, and Lorenzo Palmisani then got back to his feet to stop the follow-up from Yildiz.

Gabriele Calvani produced a crucial sliding challenge just as Kolo Muani was about to pull the trigger, and Conceicao then missed another huge opportunity by blazing over an open goal after a brilliant assist from Zeki Celik.

With the score still at 1-0, the contest remained alive. Fini tested Vicario with a difficult save after changing pace sharply, while Conceicao skipped past two defenders before drilling an effort inches wide from the edge of the box.

Vicario went down with cramp in the final minute and was replaced by Mattia Perin for stoppage time, possibly his last appearance for the club before an expected move to Palermo.

Perin was nearly beaten moments later when Calvani met a corner with a free header, but Juventus were saved by the goalframe.
