BJP leader CT Ravi was detained on Monday as the party staged a protest in Bengaluru demanding the resignation of Karnataka Minister B Nagendra over the alleged multi-crore Karnataka Valmiki Corporation scam.

The protest turned tense outside the gates of Vidhana Soudha, with BJP leaders attempting to enter the state legislature and police personnel blocking their way.

Before he was detained, BJP leader CT Ravi said, "There are allegations against him of looting funds of Valmiki Development Corporation. Earlier, he was arrested."

Clash Between BJP Leaders And Police

The BJP had earlier announced plans to lay siege to Vidhana Soudha over the issue. The party first staged a protest at Freedom Park before marching towards the legislature.

Karnataka Leader of Opposition R Ashoka accused the Congress-led government of using force against peaceful protesters and reiterated the BJP's demand for Nagendra's resignation.

"Because B Nagendra has looted the Valmiki money... more than 180 crores. So this must be returned. That's why we are protesting in front of the Vidhan Soudha. Vidhan Soudha mutthige (siege). The police have handled us roughly. This government is attacking the opposition. This is not good," R Ashoka said. 

He alleged that BJP leaders were handled roughly by police during the protest and said the demonstration would continue.

The standoff saw BJP leaders pushing towards the Vidhana Soudha gates while police personnel tried to prevent them from entering, leading to scuffles at the barricades.

BJP Alleges Rs 187 Crore Irregularity

Ashoka has alleged that Rs 187 crore belonging to the Valmiki Corporation was looted from the state treasury and used to finance Congress election campaigns in Karnataka and Telangana.

The BJP has been demanding accountability and Nagendra's resignation in connection with the allegations.

Priyank Kharge Hits Back

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge criticised the BJP's street protest and asked the opposition to raise the issue inside the Assembly.

"Is Nagendra a convicted person?" Kharge said, arguing that Nagendra had already held a press conference to clarify his position and that Deputy Chief Minister had also stated the government's position.

Kharge urged the BJP to submit a notice in the Assembly and debate the matter on the floor of the House instead of holding protests outside.

Questioning the BJP's allegations, Kharge also referred to the CBI chargesheet and pending files concerning politicians before the Governor.

The protest and police action come amid the BJP's continued demand for action against those allegedly involved in the Valmiki Corporation fund controversy.
