In the African country of Guinea, a mountain of garbage collapsed causing a major disaster, due to which 30 people lost their lives. In fact, several huts were buried in the debris and 30 people lost their lives. According to figures released by the Guinean government, a huge pile of garbage collapsed in the largest landfill or waste dumping site in Guinea’s capital Conakry early Sunday morning and caused the accident.
Officials said heavy rains that began around 2 a.m. washed away accumulated garbage in Dar es Salaam, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks. Rescue operations are underway at the scene to search for survivors. Six people were seriously injured and many huts were destroyed.
The decision to close Conakry’s largest open waste dump was made on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Balde Mamadou Baylo, sanitation officer of the Military Engineering Battalion. Evacuation notices were issued to residents living near the landfill, forcing many to leave the area, but many were still present at the time of the accident, according to officials.
“We will ensure that the remaining families are relocated and accommodated,” said Regional Administration and Decentralization Minister Diabou Touré, who was at the scene in Conakry.
