Madras HC Extends Stay On 5 Tamil Nadu Bypolls

The Election Commission of India (ECI) informed the court that it has no plans to notify the bypolls until the pending election petitions are decided. The five constituencies are Tiruchy East, Viralimalai, Perundurai, Ambasamudram and Karur.
The court rejected the plea from the TVK government seeking to vacate the existing stay. The ECI's submission that it would not announce the bypolls until the election cases are resolved was opposed by Chief Minister Vijay's side.
The state government has sought an early hearing of the case seeking a stay on the bypolls. However, the interim stay will remain in place until the pending election petitions are decided.
