Manchester United continue to be strongly associated with a summer move for Alejandro Balde, and Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has now spoken about the defender’s future. The Red Devils have already spent heavily on midfield reinforcements in this transfer window, bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.
With a deal for Carlos Baleba also said to be virtually wrapped up, INEOS have now shifted their attention to other parts of the squad. A new left-back is still part of the plan, especially with Luke Shaw’s contract due to run out at the end of this season.
The England international started all 38 Premier League matches last season, but he has now recently turned 31. With United competing on four fronts this term, they require greater depth behind Shaw in the squad.
As a move for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall appears almost impossible to pull off this summer, the Red Devils have started looking at other options. Recent reports have indicated that Balde is currently one of the names on their shortlist.
Balde came through the youth system at Barcelona before making his breakthrough into the senior team in 2021. Since then, the Spaniard has established himself in the first-team setup and has also remained an important player under Hansi Flick.
Last season, Balde provided three assists in 42 appearances in all competitions, playing his part as the Catalan club won the league title and the Supercopa de Espana.
Balde’s attacking quality and electric pace make him an ideal long-term successor to Luke Shaw at left-back. The 22-year-old matches the age profile favoured by INEOS, while his experience of winning trophies could also prove to be a major boost for United’s squad.
The Spaniard has been left out of Barcelona’s squad for the upcoming LaLiga match against Elche, which has only increased speculation over what lies ahead for him. Ahead of Sunday’s game, Flick gave his assessment of Balde’s situation at Camp Nou while speaking to the media.
When asked directly about Balde and whether he was part of his plans this summer, Flick delivered a firm answer. He said: “It’s a difficult question. Balde has a lot of quality.”
“For me it is important, as I have said before, you have to have the condition to compete in a home position and this I want to see in each player.”
“I see what they do every day, which shows me that they are ready to play at the highest level. In the end, we will only succeed as a team. We need everyone 100% committed to us.”
Balde would be a remarkable addition to Carrick’s squad and would strengthen the side immediately. United should therefore do everything they can to push the deal through.
