India face Argentina in a must-win Pool E clash in Phase 2 of the Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 at the Wagener Stadium in Amstelveen on Monday.

India’s semi-final hopes suffered a major blow after they went down 1-3 to the Netherlands in their opening Phase 2 match. The defeat left India without a point from their first two games of this stage, meaning they now need a big win against Argentina and favourable results elsewhere to keep their last-four hopes alive.

The Netherlands have already secured their semi-final place after winning both their Phase 2 matches. England and Argentina currently have three points each, while India are yet to open their account.

India therefore face a complicated qualification equation. A victory over Argentina is essential, but the margin could also prove crucial. India’s hopes will additionally depend on the result of the England-Netherlands clash.

India entered Phase 2 after finishing second in Pool D, having beaten Wales 3-1 and Pakistan 5-3 while losing 2-4 to England.

Argentina, meanwhile, are also fighting for a place in the semi-finals and will know that a win would put them in a strong position to progress.
