Young Manchester United striker Ethan Wheatley has now decided where he will play his football this season.
A highly promising attacking talent, it is unfortunate that Wheatley’s career has not progressed in the way many had anticipated.
Loan spells at Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City have not managed to revive his development after his impressive time in the Manchester United academy.
Wheatley has found it difficult to unlock his potential and rediscover his goalscoring edge after returning from his Bradford City loan this summer without scoring in 12 league appearances, leaving United to determine the best next step for him.
Another loan move appeared to be the most sensible option, and it is now clear where the 20-year-old will be playing this season.
According to Football Insider, “Ethan Wheatley has agreed to join Lincoln City on a season-long loan.”
The report further states that “[Wheatley] will now undergo a medical before putting pen to paper to finalise his move to the Championship club after an agreement has been reached between all parties.”
There will be hope that this switch finally helps bring the best out of Wheatley.
Capable of dropping deep and linking play, while also standing out for his clinical finishing, he could become a genuine asset if the Imps are able to use him properly and if he can contribute to their push for promotion in the Championship.
Even so, Wheatley may not be the only United player to head out on loan as transfer deadline day draws ever closer.
Harry Amass, Chido Obi, Joshua Zirkzee and Dan Gore have also been linked with possible loan exits.
Meanwhile, INEOS are expected to round off their summer business with the signing of a left-back, with Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly still being linked.
Overall credibility: 9/10 Why?
✅ Reported by a decent source that covers English football and echoed by a reputable source
✅ Wheatley was expected to spend this season away from Manchester United
We believe Wheatley’s move to Lincoln City will go through unless another club produces a dramatic late hijack.
