Is Your Pillow Stiff as a Rock? Make It Softer Without Spending ₹1

A pillow that feels too firm can make sleeping uncomfortable and may leave you waking up with neck or shoulder stiffness. Before buying a new pillow, there are a few simple tricks you can try at home using what you already have.

1. Fluff It Properly

If your pillow has become compressed, place it on a clean, flat surface and knead and squeeze it with both hands for a few minutes. Turn it over and repeat.

For a fibre-filled pillow, you can also gently shake it from different sides to redistribute the filling.

2. Put It in the Dryer—If the Care Label Allows

For pillows that are dryer-safe, placing them in a dryer on a low-heat or air-fluff setting can help loosen compressed filling.

Add a couple of clean dryer balls or suitable alternatives if recommended by the manufacturer. Check the care label first, as some foam pillows should never be put in a dryer.

3. Adjust the Filling

Some pillows have a removable or accessible filling. If yours does, remove a small amount of filling at a time until you reach a more comfortable firmness.

Keep the removed filling in a clean bag—you can add it back later if needed.

Never cut open a pillow that isn’t designed to be adjusted.

4. Fold or Scrunch It Differently

Sometimes the pillow isn’t actually too firm; it’s simply holding its shape in an uncomfortable way.

Try folding or gently scrunching a fibre pillow before placing your head on it. This can redistribute the filling and create a softer area around your head.

5. Use an Existing Soft Layer

If you have an old soft cotton bedsheet, thin blanket or towel at home, you can fold it and place it over or underneath the pillow to change its feel and height.

Avoid making the pillow excessively high, especially if it causes your neck to bend upward while sleeping.

The Bottom Line

Before spending money on a new pillow, try fluffing, redistributing or adjusting the existing filling. These simple methods can make a surprisingly noticeable difference.

If the pillow remains uncomfortably firm or is causing persistent neck or shoulder pain, replacing it with one that better suits your sleeping position may ultimately be the better option.
