BCCI is planning a fresh initiative to educate young cricketers about the dangers associated with drugs, betting and match-fixing. The responsibility for driving this awareness programme will be given to the new junior cricket selection committee, which is expected to be appointed at the board’s next Annual General Meeting.

BCCI has invited applications for five positions on the junior selection panel, with September 5 set as the deadline. Along with identifying and selecting talented players, the board wants the new committee to help instil strong ethical values in youngsters.

As part of the initiative, young players could interact with current and former international cricketers to understand the risks surrounding drugs, betting and match-fixing.

A BCCI official, speaking to PTI on condition of anonymity, stressed the importance of starting such education early. According to the official, young players can be vulnerable to negative influences, particularly as money and fame become increasingly significant even at the Under-19 level.

New committee to replace existing panel

The incoming junior selection committee will replace the current five-member panel comprising S. Sharath from the South Zone, chairman Krishan Mohan from the North, Ranadeb Bose from the East, Pathik Patel from the West and Harvinder Singh Sodhi from the Central Zone.

The existing committee was appointed in September 2021 and is approaching the end of its five-year tenure. Its final assignment will be to select the Rest of India Under-23 squad for the Junior Irani Cup against the CK Nayudu Trophy champions.

Selectors to handle wider responsibilities

The new panel will be responsible for selecting teams across age groups up to Under-22 for domestic and international fixtures, as well as coaching camps. The committee will also play a role in developing a strong pool of young talent for Indian cricket.

Selectors will monitor players during domestic and international matches and assess their performances as part of the selection process.

Former cricketers seeking a place on the committee must meet certain eligibility requirements. Applicants must have played at least 25 first-class matches and should have retired from the game at least five years ago.
