Prabath Jayasuriya has been handed an official reprimand for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo. The incident occurred at the end of Day 2 after the Sri Lankan spinner was dismissed with the final delivery of the day.

Jayasuriya had expressed his frustration over the poor light before losing his wicket. Visibly upset as he walked back to the pavilion, the Sri Lankan batsman repeatedly looked towards the umpires before throwing away his gloves after reaching the dressing room. “Just look at Prabath Jayasuriya, there is steam coming out of his ears,” Sanjay Manjrekar said on the Sony Sports Network.

Prabath Jayasuriya Admits Breach, Receives One Demerit Point

The ICC found that Jayasuriya had violated Article 2.2 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. It relates to “use or abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an International Match”.

The incident occurred when he faced the last ball of the second day, when he walked off in frustration after being bowled out. He hit the boundary wax wedges with his bat.

In addition to the official reprimand, Jayasuriya received one demerit point. It was his first offense under the ICC code in the past 24 months, and he admitted the offense and accepted the proposed penalty by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. Hence, a formal hearing was not required.

The charge was brought against Prabath Jayasuriya by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.

Finally, breaches involving level 1 of the ICC code of conduct may result in a minimum of one official reprimand and a maximum fine of up to 50 per cent of the match fee and one or two demerit points.
