Onion Price Hike: The rising prices of onion in Delhi-NCR have started spoiling the kitchen budget of common people. The retail price of onion in the capital has reached around Rs 55 per kg, whereas in the same period last year it was around Rs 35 per kg.
To control rising prices and provide relief to consumers, the central government is now preparing to intervene at the retail level. The government can start selling subsidized onions through mobile vans in different areas of Delhi NCR.
Onion can be bought for Rs 35 per kg
According to the plan being prepared at the government level, onions can be made available through mobile vans in Delhi NCR at a subsidized rate of about Rs 35 per kg. Locations for these mobile vans can be selected in the coming days. The aim of this initiative is to provide direct relief to those consumers who are forced to buy onions at increased prices in the market. Considering the need and market situation, the government can further expand the scope of this system to other cities also.
Supply is being increased from Kanda Express
Along with providing subsidized onions at the retail level, the central government has also laid emphasis on transportation system to increase the supply of onions. Kanda Express trains were started from Monday from Nashik in Maharashtra to major consumption centers of the country. Through these trains, efforts are being made to transport onions from Nashik to big cities like Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Madurai and Guwahati. The government’s strategy is to increase the availability of onion in major mandis, so that the pressure on prices in the wholesale market can be reduced.
