Matthew Hayden names ideal candidate to coach CSK

Hayden believes that the former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik Could be a strong option as Fleming's successor. The Australian believes Karthik's connection with Chennai makes him a particularly good fit for the franchise, which has always valued its identity and its bond with the city. Karthik was born in Chennai and represented Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, giving him a natural connection with the region. According to Hayden, this local understanding could prove valuable in the role of head coach, especially for a franchise that is deeply rooted in its home city, such as CSK.

“A few names have been mentioned; one of them was Dinesh Karthik, who I think is probably ready to take on this kind of role. I think it's important to have a local coach,” Hayden said in a conversation with Sportstar.

The former Australian opener also admitted that many IPL franchises give preference to international coaches. However, he believes that CSK could benefit from appointing someone who understands the culture and character around the team.

“I know many franchises go for international coaches, but I feel the role of head coach of a big franchise like CSK should have that kind of local touch, even a Chennai touch, which is why I thought Dinesh would be perfect,” He added.

Karthik's recent involvement in cricket after his playing career has also strengthened his credentials as a potential coach. His experience in domestic cricket, international cricket and the IPL can give him a comprehensive understanding of the modern game and the pressures placed on players.

CSK hopes for a change in fortunes under new coach

Whoever takes over the responsibility will inherit a CSK team that is in need of significant change. The franchise has experienced a sharp decline in results since winning the IPL title in 2023. In IPL 2024, CSK finished in fifth place, winning seven from 14 matches, and missed the playoffs. Their fortunes worsened in 2025, when they finished last on the points table with only four wins from 14 matches.

The 2026 season also could not bring the desired revival. CSK finished in eighth place with 12 points from 14 matches and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season. The new coach will therefore be tasked with rebuilding confidence, while maintaining the culture that has made CSK one of the most successful teams in IPL history. It remains to be seen whether the franchise ultimately follows Hayden's suggestion and turn to Karthik, but the search for Fleming's successor is likely to be one of the biggest buzzwords ahead of IPL 2027.
