Cameroon international finally completes his long-awaited move to Old Trafford.

Carlos Baleba said the chance to learn from Michael Carrick was a major reason behind his decision to join Manchester United after his £70m move from Brighton was officially confirmed.

United announced Baleba’s signing from Brighton on Tuesday afternoon, with the midfielder arriving in a deal reported to be worth £65 million initially, plus a further £5m in add-ons. He has signed a five-year contract, with the club holding the option to extend it by another 12 months.

He completed his medical on Saturday while his new team-mates were suffering a 2-0 away defeat to Hull City in the opening match of their Premier League season.

The Red Devils have been tracking Baleba for a while and had attempted, unsuccessfully, to sign him last summer. It is viewed as a significant addition for the club, with the move completing a midfield revamp that has already brought Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to Old Trafford this summer.

After signing his new contract, Baleba explained that the arrival of Carrick, himself a top-class former midfielder, as manager played a key role in persuading him to head north.

“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he told the club website.

Baleba’s new squad number has not yet been announced.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me reach the highest level.

“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

Baleba, who was not included in the matchday squad as Brighton thrashed Aston Villa on Sunday, will hope to make his United debut this Saturday when they host Ipswich Town.
