Babita Singh Reporting brings together an intriguing murder mystery and the personal journey of a reluctant cop. In an exclusive conversation with Zoom, director Ambiecka Pandit opened up about the thought behind the Barun Sobti starrer and how the project took shape. She revealed that the story originated with writer Amitabh Vash, who wanted to explore a cop caught between her professional identity and domestic responsibilities. As Babita Singh investigates the murder of her childhood friend while technically suspended from duty, the case becomes deeply personal. Pandit explained how this emotional connection ultimately becomes the catalyst for Babita to confront different aspects of her life and discover herself.

Speaking exclusively to Zoom, director Ambiecka Pandit shared how the idea for Babita Singh Reporting came from writer Amita Vyas, who wanted to tell the story of a reluctant cop caught between her professional and personal life.

“So it really came across Amita Vyas's mind who's the writer and I think it came because she wanted to tell this story of a very reluctant cop.” Pandit explained that Babita Singh is a cop who takes a suspension and returns to her in-laws’ house. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when a childhood friend goes missing and is later murdered.

“Babita Singh is a cop but she takes suspension to go back to her in-laws' house and it so happens that then a childhood friend of hers goes missing, is murdered and then she has to get into that investigation," she said.

“So when she's investigating, she's technically not a cop, which is why you see her not in uniform for most of the film," Ambiecka said. Pandit also highlighted the importance of Babita’s relationship with her childhood friend. The emotional bond gives the investigation a deeply personal dimension and makes her determination to uncover the truth more compelling.

 

“That relationship is very special to her. It's a very, very dear friend. It's someone who understood her very deeply," the director shared. For Babita, solving the case is about more than simply uncovering the truth behind a murder. Her determination to find answers for someone she cared deeply about also pushes her to confront her own circumstances. She said, “And that sort of becomes a catalyst to her to stand up for herself in her domestic and her professional life.”

Pandit added that Babita’s pursuit of justice ultimately becomes a journey of self-discovery, allowing her to understand herself in the process of seeking closure for her friend. “Because that need to solve that, to close that, to do that for her friend is so, so compelling that in the process of doing that she discovers herself also.”

Meanwhile, Babita Singh Reporting is scheduled for a worldwide release on August 28, 2026, exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
