Lighter is used daily to light gas in the kitchen. If its spark becomes weak or the gas does not burn even after clicking several times, then people often consider it bad and immediately buy a new lighter. But the lighter does not go bad every time. Many times, dirt, moisture or other minor reasons affect the performance of the spark pin.
Dirt accumulated on spark pin may be the cause
Oil, smoke, and black dirt can accumulate on the spark pin of the lighter due to continuous use. Due to this the spark becomes weak.
Keeping the lighter away from gas and fire, the spark area can be cleaned with a dry cloth or soft brush. Avoid applying force with any sharp metal objects during cleaning, as this may damage the spark system.
Is there any problem in pressing the button?
If the button of the lighter has become hard or does not return properly after being pressed, it may be due to dirt or moisture accumulated inside. First clean the outside of the lighter thoroughly and see if the button is working normally or not.
Do not try to press the button forcefully or pour water, oil or any other liquid inside it.
Lighter can also be affected by falling
If the lighter has been dropped several times, the spark mechanism inside may become dislocated. In such a situation, carefully inspect the body, buttons and other parts of the lighter from outside.
If the body is broken or any part appears loose or damaged, it is safer to replace it rather than take it apart and try to fix it yourself.
Moisture can weaken the spark
A lighter kept near a sink or constantly exposed to steam may become moist inside. Due to moisture the spark system does not function properly.
In such a situation, keep the lighter in a dry and ventilated place for some time. Do not try to heat it, expose it to strong sunlight, or dry it near any hot appliance.
Some lighters have flint system
Some older or differently designed gas lighters use flint. If the lighter wheel turns but there is no spark, the flint may be worn out.
The process of changing the flint in such lighters should be done according to the manufacturer's instructions. Avoid disassembling the lighter and attempting repairs yourself if you do not understand the mechanism.
Be careful if it is rusty
A lighter used for a long time may rust on its metal parts. Excessive corrosion or damage can affect the spark system.
If the lighter's body is cracked, the trigger is broken, or any vital parts appear to be damaged, it may be dangerous to use.
If you smell gas, do not burn it.
The most important precaution is that if there is a smell of gas from the lighter or there is a suspicion of gas leaking, then do not use it at all. Keep it away from fire, gas stove and other heat sources and replace it safely.
Similarly, if the lighter is getting unusually hot or its body is broken, it is better to get a new lighter rather than trying to repair it.
When to buy a new lighter?
If the problem is simply due to dirt or moisture, the lighter may work again after cleaning and proper drying. But it is not advisable to use the old lighter in case of gas leak, broken body, faulty valve or serious mechanical damage.
Remember, compromising safety for a small savings in gas and fire equipment can prove costly.
