Manchester United are considering a move for Newcastle United defender Lewis Hall as they look for a long-term successor to Luke Shaw. The young full-back is said to be keen on leaving St James' Park after Eddie Howe's sudden resignation and his own disappointment at being left out of England's recent World Cup squad.

United are assessing a major bid for Hall amid continuing managerial uncertainty at St James' Park. The 21-year-old defender has been identified as an ideal long-term replacement for Shaw, whose present contract at Old Trafford runs out next year.

Hall is reportedly keen to leave Tyneside following Howe's abrupt resignation. The Newcastle manager recently stepped down after a heavy 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City, throwing the club's build-up to the new season into serious disorder.

The young defender became increasingly frustrated towards the end of last season after a positional change cost him a much-desired place in Thomas Tuchel's 26-man England World Cup squad. Hall was asked to fill in at right-back because of Tino Livramento's injury. Ironically, Livramento went on to make the Three Lions squad, while Hall, who has four senior international caps, was omitted. The former Chelsea academy player believes that short tactical switch played a direct role in his painful international snub.

Hall was also left deeply unhappy after being taken off at half-time during a defeat to Bournemouth in April. He then began the next two league matches on the bench, which further damaged his relationship with the coaching staff.

Newcastle are currently dealing with a major squad rebuild during a turbulent summer transfer window. The Magpies have already approved the sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali for a combined £170m, while Arsenal are actively chasing star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

A switch to Old Trafford would also carry notable Premier League significance. Newcastle have not sold a player directly to Manchester United since Andy Cole's British record £7m move in January 1995.

At the same time, United manager Michael Carrick is in urgent need of more depth because he does not have a natural challenger for the 31-year-old Shaw. Patrick Dorgu has often been used as a winger, and the Red Devils are now ready to sell teenage full-back Harry Amass in order to balance the books.

Although Hall is currently pushing for a permanent move away, the versatile defender remains under contract with Newcastle until 2029. The expected appointment of Howe's permanent replacement could still convince the highly-rated full-back to reconsider his future and stay on Tyneside.

As the Magpies rush to bring in a new head coach, United will keep a close watch on developments. The Red Devils are well placed to test their domestic rivals' resolve if a formal opening to sign Hall emerges.
