Wayne Rooney has called on Manchester United manager Michael Carrick to leave out Luke Shaw and Andrey Santos from his starting side for Sunday’s match against Ipswich Town.

Newly-promoted Hull City produced a major shock on Saturday, cruising to a 2-0 victory over an underwhelming Red Devils side through goals from Semi Ajayi and debutant Nobel Mendy.

With Manchester United’s attack largely neutralised despite enjoying 71 per cent possession, the weekend meeting with Ipswich has now become even more significant, despite it still being early in the season.

To make matters worse for Carrick, he will be unable to use the club’s latest signing, £70million Carlos Baleba, who is still recovering from ankle ligament damage.

Carrick may decide to reshuffle his side for the upcoming game, especially after the difficulties experienced by new midfield duo Santos and Youri Tielemans, with Rooney insisting the former should be taken out of the line-up and moved to the bench.

“I think players need to take responsibility on the pitch because when you play against a Hull City or Ipswich, the next game, you can set up however you want to set up and a lot of the time it’s decisions,” Rooney said while speaking to The Overlap as he looked back on United’s display at the weekend.

“You can stop and start training sessions and say, If the ball goes here we have to come across or make sure your winger is in with you”, or whatever that is.

“But it’s decisions from players on the pitch which make the difference.”

Although Patrick Dorgu was replaced by Marcus Rashford at half-time in the game at Hull, Rooney believes Shaw should be the player sacrificed against Ipswich, with Dorgu moving from the wing to left-back.

“I’d change Luke Shaw and I’d play Dorgu at left-back, be a bit more aggressive,’ Rooney added.

“I don’t think we can rely on him [Shaw] to play all the games so when you’re playing against a newly promoted team at home, I’d play Dorgu at left-back.

“I would have kept Dorgu on and put him at left-back in the Hull game.

“I’d play [Matheus] Cunha off the left and I’d play Rashford up top.

When asked how he would alter United’s midfield, the Manchester United great replied: “Mainoo probably, yeah. I’d bring Mainoo in for Santos.”
