NASCAR’s street race held on a U.S. Navy base was one of the boldest concepts in the championship’s history, and the logistical complexity made it look like a one-time event. That will not be the case, however, as the series confirmed on Tuesday that stock car racing will head back to San Diego’s Coronado base next summer.

The event has now been rescheduled to the weekend of August 1st, 2027, and the programme has been reduced to only the Cup Series and the second-tier O’Reilly Auto Parts Series. That means the Truck Series race has been dropped, which should help ease the tightly packed timetable that was made even more difficult this year by red flags for track repairs across the race weekend.

Although the first running of the event was spectacular, it also exposed a few clear shortcomings. Drivers pointed to a bumpy and inconsistent track surface, along with walls that moved too easily and contributed to stoppages in multiple races. There were also concerns from spectators, especially over viewing angles and food options. NASCAR’s latest announcement says those latter issues will be addressed. A quote from series executive Ben Kennedy also stated that “the course, for the most part, is going to stay intact,” which appears to rule out any major layout changes that might have fixed some of the other problems.

NASCAR is yet to publish its complete 2027 schedule, and there are still some significant gaps in the calendar despite this latest update. The decision to return to San Diego settles one of the biggest outstanding questions around the schedule, but several dates still need to be confirmed before the full season calendar is finalised.
