Raheem Sterling is facing the possibility of a two-year jail term after being formally charged following a high-profile car crash in May. The former Manchester City and Liverpool winger was involved in a single-vehicle accident on the M3 in his luxury Lamborghini.

Former England star faces serious charges

According to reports, Sterling could be sentenced to up to two years in prison if he is found guilty of dangerous driving after his £270,000 Lamborghini was involved in a motorway crash. The 31-year-old winger has also been charged with possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation and with failing to provide a specimen.

A Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary spokesperson confirmed the legal action, saying: "A driver will appear in court next month to face charges following a collision on the M3. Raheem Sterling, 31, from Berkshire, has been charged for the following offences: dangerous driving, possession of nitrous oxide for wrongful inhalation, failing to provide a specimen."

Nitrous oxide and legal implications

The charge linked to nitrous oxide, widely known as laughing gas, is a serious one because the substance was reclassified as a Class C controlled drug in November 2023. Its use has remained a concern in professional football despite the well-documented risks of heart attacks, strokes and brain damage. Sterling, who had previously been released on bail while enquiries continued, will now have to respond to the specific charges in court.

The crash happened near the Minley Interchange, with witnesses saying the vehicle struck motorway barriers. Although neither the driver nor any other road users were injured, the manner of driving described by witnesses resulted in the serious dangerous driving charge. The former international has largely stayed out of the spotlight since the incident.

A career at a crossroads

This legal issue has arrived during a period of professional uncertainty for the four-time Premier League winner. After a trophy-filled spell at Manchester City, Sterling's £50 million move to Chelsea in 2022 signalled the start of a difficult phase in his career.

People close to the player have suggested that his mental health suffered during his time at Stamford Bridge, where he was eventually made to train away from the first-team squad under Enzo Maresca.

A later loan switch to Arsenal did not revive his form, and that was followed by a short-term spell with Dutch club Feyenoord. That deal ended at the close of last season, leaving Sterling a free agent.

Isolation and public scrutiny

One source described the pressure Sterling has been under, saying: "He was a prolific international who steered the England squad to significant heights over the last decade and has been made to feel worthless. The psychological strain that has put on him is immeasurable. He feels isolated. The second he touches a ball, he’s told he’s a flop and he’s finished. He’s been mocked and heckled."

With the September court date drawing closer, attention remains on the legal consequences of the M3 collision. Sterling, who is engaged to Paige Milian and has three children, must now deal with these charges while his future in professional football remains uncertain.
