Kuala Lumpur International Airport served 36.7 million passengers in the first seven months of this year, up 3.4% year-on-year, driven by summer travel demand from Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia.
The airport, the largest in Southeast Asia by land area, handled five million passengers in July, up 6.6% from June, The Star newspaper reported.
A series of new direct routes to Kuala Lumpur were launched in June, including AirAsia's Kuala Lumpur–Kansai service, China Eastern Airlines' Dalian–Kuala Lumpur route via Nanjing, Lion Air's Kuala Lumpur–Lombok and Banjarmasin–Kuala Lumpur services, and Batik Air's flights from Shanghai and Padang to Kuala Lumpur, the New Straits Times reported.

The new services strengthened Malaysia’s connectivity with key regional markets while expanding travel options for passengers.
To improve security, Malaysia will implement targeted, risk-based screening of high-risk flights, passengers, crew and baggage at Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s terminals 1 and 2, following the arrest of a Malaysian commercial pilot at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta on July 29 with more than 70,000 ecstasy pills weighing about 25 kg in his luggage, along with 4 grams of methamphetamine in his carry-on belongings.
