Floods in Nepal crash stock market up to 15%

Nepal Flood Updates: The severe floods in Rasuwa and Bhotekoshi areas of Nepal have caused great devastation. Major hydropower projects in the area have suffered major damage. More than 15 hydroelectric projects, a 25 MW solar plant and several substations were completely damaged due to the floods. Hundreds of people are missing and Nepal has suffered a heavy economic blow as floodwaters recede into villages and cities.
Earlier also in July-2025, more than 28 people died due to floods in Rasuva and Bhotekoshi areas and 4 major hydropower projects including Rasuvagadi and Trishuli were damaged. But this time the economic loss is estimated to be more.

Impact of floods on Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE).

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) witnessed a major rout on reports of power projects being floated and power generation stalling:
  • NEPSE Index: The main index fell 35.92 points (1.38%) to close at 2,558.
  • Gap in hydropower stocks: Shares of Rasuwagadhi, Mailung Khola, Trishuli and Shaman Hydropower tumbled up to 15%. The hydro-power sub-index declined by 2.71%.
  • Insurance Sector: The non-life insurance sector fell 3.57% on fears of increased claims due to heavy losses.
