Liverpool have formally redirected their transfer efforts, making a huge offer for Crystal Palace winger Ismaila Sarr. The move follows the club’s decision to completely end talks over Brighton forward Yankuba Minteh, with Andoni Iraola now eager to bring in attacking additions before the summer transfer deadline.

Liverpool move for Sarr

According to the Mirror, Liverpool have submitted a £50 million offer to Crystal Palace for Sarr after calling off their chase for Minteh. The Anfield club had two bids turned down for Minteh, and both were well below Brighton’s firm £70m valuation.

With only five days left before the transfer window shuts on Monday, Liverpool have moved quickly to line up another option. Sarr, who joined Crystal Palace two years ago, is said to be very interested in a switch to Merseyside. The club have been badly affected by the tragic death of Diogo Jota, along with the departures of Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, which has made the need for wide attackers absolutely clear.

Strong competition for the winger

Landing the 28-year-old will not be easy, as Foot Mercato reports that Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal and Turkish heavyweights Galatasaray are both pushing to sign him. Galatasaray are believed to be in advanced discussions, while Al-Hilal are keeping a close watch on developments.

Sarr has underlined his quality over the last year, featuring 45 times in all competitions last season, scoring 21 goals and registering two assists as he helped Palace win the UEFA Europa Conference League. The winger also impressed at the World Cup this summer, scoring four goals before Senegal were knocked out by Belgium in the round of 32.

Iraola wants signings without delay

Liverpool manager Iraola has made no secret of his wish for immediate reinforcements, while recognising the current lack of depth in his squad amid interest from Tottenham and Manchester City in Cody Gakpo.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "Some deals you have to wait until the end. But the end is the important picture, the one we will have on September 1, because it is true that we are still quite thin." The Spaniard also pointed out the challenges of working in an open market, admitting he had wanted every position to be doubled up with top-level players before the season started, but that he now has to adjust.

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool now need to move decisively to beat overseas competition and wait for Crystal Palace’s official reply to their £50m bid. If a deal is agreed, Sarr could complete a medical before Monday’s deadline. At the same time, the club are continuing separate discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over a possible move for Bradley Barcola as they look to add further strength to their attacking options.
