New York, August 26, 2026: America has officially removed Syria from its list of 'State Sponsors of Terrorism'. After being in this list for almost 45 years, this step of America is being considered a major diplomatic and economic change for Syria. Due to its inclusion in this list, many types of financial and trade sanctions were imposed on Syria, which now has every possibility of clearing a new path for foreign investment and economic activities in the country.
America first included Syria in the list of countries sponsoring terrorism in 1979. Syria had been in this list for four and a half decades, but now America has taken this big decision keeping in mind the fall of the Assad government in the country and the important steps taken by the new government against terrorist organizations like ISIS, Al-Qaeda. US President Donald Trump had announced to start the process of removing Syria from this list on July 8, 2026. After this, the US Congress was given 45 days time for the review process and as soon as this process was completed, Syria was officially freed from this list on August 24. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also praised the efforts of the new Syrian government.

Now which countries are left in this list?
After Syria's exit, now only three countries are left in America's list of terrorism sponsoring countries, which includes Iran, Cuba and North Korea. America imposes harsh economic and financial sanctions on the countries in this list, which seriously affects their economy. Syria has been facing civil war and serious economic crisis for a long time. US sanctions and the country's label of sponsoring terrorism made it extremely difficult for foreign companies and financial institutions to do business with Syria. Now, with the removal of this major hurdle, new doors will open for international investment and business opportunities. It is noteworthy that the World Bank had estimated the total cost of reconstruction of Syria in the year 2025 to be around 216 billion dollars, so this decision will prove to be a relief for the development of the country.
