Liverpool will take on Tottenham, while Manchester United have been drawn against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
The third-round draw of the Carabao Cup has thrown up a huge all-Premier League contest, with Liverpool set to host Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. The draw also produced several other attractive possible top-flight meetings, with Manchester United facing Brighton and Arsenal travelling to Ipswich Town in what promises to be a hectic and much-anticipated week of domestic cup football across England.
Big-ticket ties lined up in round three
As per Sky Sports, the Carabao Cup third-round draw has produced a string of eye-catching domestic fixtures, led by Liverpool’s home match against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield. There could be as many as six all-Premier League ties in the round, giving supporters some major contests at an early stage.
Manchester United will host Brighton at Old Trafford in a repeat of last season’s FA Cup meeting, in which Brighton knocked Manchester United out. Arsenal, meanwhile, are due to travel to Ipswich Town, while Sunderland will face Hull City in another confirmed all-top-flight clash. Everton are also getting ready to host Wolverhampton Wanderers in what is expected to be a fiercely contested game.
European participants separated in the draw
The eight clubs involved in European competitions this season, including Manchester City and Aston Villa, were intentionally kept apart in the third-round draw.
Manchester City have been handed a home tie against Norwich City, while Aston Villa will travel to Coventry City for a Midlands derby. Chelsea will host Leeds United if they get past Luton Town in their outstanding second-round match. Elsewhere, Newcastle United will head to London to take on Millwall. Fleetwood Town, the only fourth-tier side still left in the competition, will host Sheffield United for a place in the fourth round.
Second round to finish on Thursday
Before the third round gets under way, the remaining second-round fixtures need to be completed on Thursday. While Chelsea face Luton Town, West Ham United are waiting for the winner of Fulham versus AFC Wimbledon. The teams that come through those final matches will complete the full 16-game line-up for the next stage. The draw has also created plenty of interest elsewhere, with Bradford City earning a meeting with Leyton Orient after their penalty shootout win over Burnley. Brentford will also play Reading as clubs from across the English Football League aim to put together a memorable cup run.
What comes next for the clubs?
The Carabao Cup third-round matches will be played during the weeks beginning September 7 and September 14. The five Premier League clubs involved in the Champions League will play their ties in the second of those weeks to help manage their demanding European commitments. Managers will now start planning their squads for these important knockout fixtures as the domestic schedule becomes even more intense.
